Birding Big Day 2018
The African continent is going big with this year’s Birding Big Day (BBD), taking place Saturday 24 November 2018. In South Africa, BirdLife South Africa will host their 34rd BBD.

Ernst Retief, event organiser: “During Birding Big Day 2016 more than a thousand birders recorded 654 species, a record, and also raised some valuable funds for bird conservation. During the 2018 event we hope to break this record and have even more birders out enjoying nature.” More on their website.

Elsewhere on the continent, South Africa’s neighbours close by and far afield have decided to take on the challenge to see which country can log the most species in 24 hours. Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya, Egypt and a few more, will host their own BBD’s.

Good luck to all the teams on the day – let’s see how many of Africa’s species will be recorded.
